The drive from Pompeii to Vesuvius takes about 30 minutes and offers fantastic views. You’ll wind through dense forests, lush Mediterranean vegetation, and arid lava fields. A short uphill walk of 700 meters will bring you to the lip of the crater, where you can gaze into the immense chasm and take in the breathtaking panoramic views. As you stand there, you might feel chills as you contemplate the rivers of solidified lava from recent eruptions. Although currently sleeping, Vesuvius remains an active volcano, with its activity now mostly limited to fumaroles—emissions of hot, sulfurous gases.
