3. GA4 – Statistical processing of visitors through Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
The data processed by the Data Controller refer to the processing of statistical data of visits made on a specific website or mobile application through the use of Google Analytics 4 (GA4), which does not record nor store IP addresses.
Lawfulness Condition of Processing: Performance of Contract – Art. 6, para. 1, lett. b. GDPR
Purpose of the processing: 1) The purpose of the processing is the collection and processing of the personal data of the user of the website and/or mobile applications in order to carry out statistical processing through the Google Analytics 4 (GA4) tool.
Mandatory – The provision of personal data is necessary for the provision of the services through the website of the Data Controller. Statistical processing is strictly connected to the technical cookies useful for recording the user’s visits. Blocking cookies by the user will make it impossible to use the services of the site/application.
The data collected for statistical processing are stored for 14 months and deleted after the period has elapsed from the date of collection of the personal information.
Processing is carried out with IT tools: during the collection of data, Google Analytics 4 does not record nor store IP addresses. When Analytics collects measurement data, all IP searches are carried out on servers located in the EU before forwarding the traffic to Analytics servers for processing. Analytics deletes any IP addresses collected on users in the EU before recording these data through domains and servers located in the EU.
Analytics provides approximate geographic location data by deriving the following metadata from IP addresses: city (plus the derived latitude and longitude of the city), continent, country, geographic area, subcontinent (and equivalents based on the ID). Furthermore, Analytics provides controls for: – disabling the collection of Google Signals data based on geographic area; – disabling the collection of granular data on location and device based on geographic area.
Google Analytics uses data centers at geographic-area level to ensure that measurements relating to web users and those of mobile device apps are sent to Google Analytics in the fastest and safest possible way. When Analytics establishes a connection with the nearest available Google data collection center, the measurement data are sent to Analytics through an encrypted HTTPS connection. In the collection centers the data are further encrypted before being forwarded to Analytics processing servers and made available in the Analytics platform. IP addresses are used to determine the optimal local data center. In Google Analytics 4, IP addresses are used at the time of collection to determine location information (country, city, latitude and longitude of the city) and then deleted before the data are recorded in any data center or server.
The collection of data at geographic-area level improves the performance of websites and mobile device apps as it minimizes the distance and total time necessary for sending data through a secure connection to Google’s data centers. The collection of data at geographic-area level and Google’s data center infrastructure also enable redundancy so that, in the unlikely event that a local data center is no longer available, another one in that geographic area may continue to offer the full service and support users.
The Data Controller has excluded, from the collection of GA4 information, the functions relating to user profiling, the functions relating to personal advertising; moreover, the Data Controller does not perform data matching between Analytics statistical processing and the subscribers to the services offered by the website.
Data transfer outside the EU
Personal data are also processed outside the European Union at: Countries outside the EEA. The safeguard conditions for the transfer are: Standard Clauses and ad hoc contractual clauses (Art. 46 GDPR). To obtain a copy of the safeguard conditions or details on where they are available, it is possible to send a request to the contacts of the Data Controller.
